Several members of theActions Committee including Avraham Menachem Mendel Ussishkin are opposed tothe plan. Ussishkin and Herzl were both fervent Zionists but they had differentviews as to the goal of establishing a Jewish home in Eretz Israel could beaccomplished. Born in 1863 in Russia, Ussishkin would become an early Zionist leaderand first President of the Jewish Nation Fund or JNF. In his youth, he became anenthusiastic reader of the works of contemporary Hebrew writers in his teens,and from then on the revival of the Hebrew language was one of the main goalsof his life work. Like many other early Hibbat Zion members, he was shocked bythe Russian pogroms of 1881, which emphasized to him the necessity for Jewishemigration. Ussishkin then began working actively for several Zionist groups.After graduating as a technical engineer from the Technological Institute inMoscow, he became active in Hebrew educational work as well as in Zionistpropaganda and fund-raising in Russia.
